Walking into a room and not knowing a soul terrifies me. Its like that scene in Mean Girls when Lindsey Lohan walks into the lunch room, looks around, everyone is laughing, having the best time of their life and tries to sit with the cool girls. I fear just standing there not knowing which way to go, if someone will accept me and if I sit down at their table will I say the right thing –AHHH Terrifying!
But the truth is I’m not in middle school and I’m not Lindsey Lohan (thank you Jesus) so I need to get over it! The more events I go to I make myself take a leap into the networking world. Here is what I have come up with that helps me.
Set A Goal
Who do you want to meet? What do you want to accomplish?
Get Business Cards
This may seem old school to some but I regularly go through my large stack of cards.
This is like making plans and showing up, you must follow up or people will consider you a flake! This should be done within one week. This is not like Thank you cards where you get a year– make it priority!
Honestly, I don’t think anyone loves networking, you are really only there because you want something and they know it and they are there for the same reasons. So, be yourself and have fun!
How are you going to meet new peeps if you are not putting yourself out there. So try to attend at least one or two industry related events each year. Here is a list of affiliate events I think are worth the trip in 2017.
